The slow fashion process

Our approach to reducing impact on the environment:

-purchase raw materials as close to home as possible, without compromising on the quality;

-use the lowest-impact colouring techniques and plants

-reuse water and cotton thread;

-collect only endemic plants;

We would love to offer you organic cotton because it is the way forward for the environment, but it is not possible to obtain it locally as it is hardly grown in Guatemala for commercial purposes. We are constantly exploring our options and hope to offer that in the near future regardless of the financial, bureaucratic and logistical issues.

Our approach to the community we work in:

The women who make the clothes are at the centre of the brand. Without them, the brand would not exist.  

We buy most necessary materials including raw cotton thread, dried tree bark, powdered indigo (añil plant) and cochineal at local markets promoting vendors that rely on these sales. We purchase alum needed for fixing the plant dyes from a certified company in Guatemala City making sure it does not include harmful pollutants and our plant dyes are of the highest possible quality.

Women gather endemic dye plants in and around the village or purchase them from other community members in case they grow them in their garden. Some of these plants include willow (chilca), avocado peel, achiote seeds, sacatinta and thrown away coconut shells.
