PLANT DYEING IS AN ANCIENT TRADITION. Our textiles exclusively feature raw and naturally dyed cotton thread. Some of our weavers specialise in plant dyes, enjoying experimenting with various plants and hues. This practice is reflected in Mesoamerican architecture, art and ceremonial dress.
THE PLANTS ARE LOCAL. People gather endemic dye plants in and around the village or purchase them from the local market. It provides an additional means of livelihood.
KEEPING THE PRACTICE ALIVE. Although nowadays in Guatemala most traditional clothing worn by indigenous people is not made from naturally dyed thread and the practice almost completely died during the civil war, natural plant dyeing is now a means of income in some communities, especially in San Juan la Laguna by Lake Atitlan.
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY. We chose plant dyes for their minimal environmental impact compared to industrial alternatives, while natural colours also offer a sophistication and depth unmatched by synthetics. This tradition preserves and celebrates the local knowledge about colorant plants.
